EXCERPT OF SENATE BILL NO 17 PLACED BEFORE THE ALASKA LEGISLATURE IN 1957 ....."Be it enacted by the Legislature of the Territory of Alaska: Section 1. Prohibited Acts. Editor's note: This proposed law is similar to many being proposed and enacted throughout America. And yet there are many people in our readership who feel such groups as American Civil Liberties Union are not necessary to fight censorship. In the excerpt above we have underlined the word "disgusting". Isn't that a fine all encompassing term? Under this law a particular judge or jury who might find tight T-shirts disgusting could send the guilty offender to jail. We do not defend obscenity. At the same time, we are not more ready to offer an infallible test for obscenity than are the learned gentlemen of the US Supreme Court, who find the problem a thorny one. But we do feel art, physical culture, and even nudist groups have a right to their publications without interference by any form of law as unreasonable as that above. ARE YOU DOING YOUR PART TO FIGHT THE REACTIONARIES? Left unhampered, the reactionaries in American would completely throt-

tle all freedom of expression. But fortunately they are not left unhampered. The wise men who framed our constitution provided for freedom of expression--and groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union 170 Fifth Avenue New York 10 NY, zealously fight when anyone's constitutional guarantees are abrogated. Your yearly membership contribution of $2 or more can help their wonderful program. Write them today.

Letters from Readers: VARIATIONS ON A THEME: "Dear Sire: We are beginning a new magazine and will be glad to include some of your models. Please send us (free of charge, of course) 100 or more 8x10 photos which we will publish if suitable." BT Casper Wyoming. ..... "Gentlemen: I am in charge of a home for underprivileged boys and your pictures would have great social value in encouraging these fellows to take an interest in their bodies and work out. Please send as many free pictures as possible." DA New York, NY. ....."Dear PP Editor: Some of your choices in Physique Pictorial are abominable. I suggest before publication that you send copies of proposed pictures for publication to a 'jury' of unbiased judges (such as myself) to determine which were suitable for printing in your book. We would be willing to examine these photographs for you and write out our opinions for a reasonable fee." CH Clovis NM. ....."Sirs: Your magazine has been confiscated and destroyed under the anti-nudity statutes of our import regulations. We resent the statement if your last letter that these books are kept for the personal use of the members of our staff." CD Customs and Excise Dept (Name of country withheld) are these not returned since they are sent by You c of breach of ethics" Letter from a Reader: NO MORE NUDE SWIMMING AT THE PORTLAND YMCA. "I wonder if you had heard that after present renovations are completed, nude swimming will not longer be permitted at the Portland YMCA. Apparently the prudes are gaining increasing success. There was a wonderful 'free' feeling about swimming nude without the hampering feeling of garments. How long will it be before they will pass a law making it illegal to sleep nude?" D. R.
